Nikkei Veritas: Japanese trailblazing in the blue carbon spaceTo our #bluecarbon, #biodiversity and #restoration friends, I would like to share with you an article published yesterday on Nikkei Veritas, Japan’s leading financial news source. In short, the article highlights the groundbreaking precedent #Japan has set by establishing a methodology AND functioning market for #voluntary and now nationally contributing blue carbon credits for #kelp and other #algae. The article also helps explain why Japanese #bluecarbon credits are trading at 5x the prices of equivalent carbon credits on land, both in Japan and abroad. Dr. Tomohiro Kuwae of JBE, the state-appointed research institute responsible for the J Blue Credits program, says “… the wider benefits of ecosystem services are being appreciated.”. Dr. Katsunori Yamato of Kashima, a major general contractor and active funder of blue carbon projects, says “… restoring kelp forests is not just about generating carbon credits. It contributes to marine biodiversity and to economic activity of coastal fisheries.”.Finally, Urchinomics is featured as an example of wild kelp restoration through the removal of overgrazing urchins, in collaboration with its investor ENEOS.My two cents…I think Japan called the program blue “carbon” because that was only language and framework we had at the time. But based on the market and reporting structure embedded in it, the designers at JBE clearly had co-benefits in mind, as a way to add more value to the credits than just carbon alone. Buyers I know have told me they prefer to buy these credits and pay the premium over others precisely because of the co-benefits to biodiversity and local economic development (地方創生). My two cents…Despite its name, I feel the Japanese blue carbon initiative is really the world’s first example of a stackable, ecosystem services credit, that transacts at a price level that is actually meaningful to the financing of the restoration efforts. #oceans #kelp #markets #carboncredits #restoration #bluecarbon #biodiversity Stephen Edwards Alpa Bhattacharjee Patrick Buergi Annick G. Higashikawa Town and JA Higashikawa in Hokkaido have embarked on producing a special type of rice intended as a raw material for biomass plastic. By adopting cultivation methods that reduce labor in seeding and planting, and decreasing fertilizer usage while increasing yield, "the same level of profit as that from edible rice was secured" (according to the Agricultural Guidance Division of JA Higashikawa). The Mayor of Higashikawa Town, stated, "This project is one of the measures to increase agricultural revenue along with the large-scale cultivation of rice fields. We want to produce garbage bags from bioplastic by 2024." #rice #hokkaido #japan #agriculture #farm

Japan’s Nikkei covers Urchinomics’ collaboration with Hokkaido Electric Power Company!Hokkaido Electric Power Company is Hokkaido’s primary utilities and energy company, with economic, ecologic, and social interests in the long term success of the prefecture. It is an honor to be able to work with such an important pillar of #Japanese society, and jointly improve coastal marine ecosystems, create meaningful jobs in rural communities, and further build upon the Hokkaido brand for #premium seafoods! On a more personal note though, this collaboration has a particularly important meaning to me. When I first started Urchinomics years ago, I asked the sea urchin experts in Japan, what was their greatest concern about the future of their industry. Nearly all of them told me “climate change and the loss of our Ezo Bafun Uni in Hokkaido”. For context, Hokkaido Ezo Bafun urchins are cold water green urchins that reside primarily in Hokkaido and the Russian occupied islands to the north, and are reputed to be the world’s best quality sea urchins. According to climate scientists in Japan, rising sea temperatures will push the habitable zone for the famed urchins further northwards. In about 3-5 generations, the majority of the biomass of urchins will likely end up in colder, Russian-occupied waters, while being displaced by more warm water tolerant Kita Murasaki urchins, or Northern purple urchins, as we have already seen in Aomori prefecture and southern Hokkaido. While Urchinomics and Hokkaido Electric Power Company alone may not be able to reverse these trends, leveraging our temperature controlled land-based aquaculture technologies gives us a fighting chance to preserve and restore this unique fishery, while also tackling the pernicious problem of barrens caused by both species.#Climate and #socialimpact are our driving motivation, but knowing that we can play a role in preserving a unique part of Japanese food culture brings me a lot of joy and pride.#restoration #japan #hokkaido #culture #tradition #fisheries #seafood #oceans #oceanwarming https://lnkd.in/dmrQQShu

https://lnkd.in/d8PweRHNMicroplastics kill marine ecology.1. Reduce Plastic Consumption: The best way to stop microplastics in marine sustainability is by reducing our plastic consumption. We can use reusable bags, bottles, and containers to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean.2. Proper Disposal of Plastic Waste: Proper disposal of plastic waste is crucial in reducing the amount of microplastics that end up in the ocean. We should always dispose of plastic waste in the appropriate bin, so it does not end up in the waterways, which eventually makes its way into the ocean.3. Supporting Sustainable Fishing Practices: Sustainable fishing practices, such as fishing gear modifications, avoiding fishing in sensitive areas, and reducing the amount of by-catch, can prevent plastic from entering the ocean. Supporting sustainable fishing practices put less pressure on marine ecosystems, which helps to keep microplastics out of the ocean.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has launched a plant dedicated to recovering phosphorus from wastewater. This initiative offers a two-pronged approach: bolstering economic security by lessening reliance on imported fertilisers and promoting environmental sustainability by mitigating the adverse effects of nutrient runoff.Although phosphorus is a crucial component of fertilisers, its excessive presence in waterways leads to eutrophication, harming aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity. Recovering this valuable resource from wastewater not only minimises its environmental impact but also offers a domestic source for fertiliser production, reducing dependence on international markets. For these reasons, this project will directly address the SDGs such as SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 14: Life Below Water. This innovative project demonstrates Tokyo's commitment to resource efficiency and environmental stewardship. By embracing circular economy principles, the city paves the way for a more sustainable future.#Tokyo #Sustainability #WastewaterTreatment #CircularEconomy #FoodSecurity #sdgs

Cosmo Energy Holdings (Cosmo HD) will open Japan's first large-scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility at its Sakai plant. The company plans to begin production in 2025 and is already securing used cooking oil as a key raw material. SAF is vital for reducing carbon emissions in aviation, and there is growing global competition for these resources. Cosmo HD's facility will produce 30,000 kiloliters of SAF annually. To secure raw materials, Cosmo HD has agreements with restaurants like Marugame Seimen and Sushiro to collect used cooking oil (UCO), which will be transported to airports for use by airlines. However, as demand grows, competition for resources is expected to intensify, and Japan's goal is to replace 10% of jet fuel with SAF by 2030.Other Japanese oil companies, like ENEOS and Idemitsu, are also planning to produce SAF but face challenges in securing enough used cooking oil. Some companies may need to import raw materials from overseas. Idemitsu is considering to import 70 to 80% of the UCO needed for its SAF production. Global competition is fierce, with companies like Shell and Chevron acquiring businesses to secure resources. Despite the challenges, Japan supports SAF development with tax breaks and investment.
